Toffee Apples
Bonfire night, toffee apples and hot dogs - but not in that order. Good fun to make with the children but please beware the toffee coating gets dangerously hot and needs constant adult supervision.
Preparation time: 30 minutes or so Quantity: makes 4 apples Cooking time: 15 minutes
Ingredients
Toffee Coating -
250 g / 9 oz demerara sugar
1/2 teaspoon malt vinegar
2 large tablespoons golden syrup
25 g / 1 oz butter - preferably unsalted
70 ml water
Apple -
4 English eating apples
4 long sticks or bamboo skewers
Method
- Add all the ingredients for the toffee coating to a thick bottomed pan
- Bring to the boil and rapid simmer to a hard ball - 120*c, approx. 12 - 15 minutes (golden brown and syrupy)
- Stick the sticks in to the apples
- Dip each apple in to the syrup coating well
- Leave to set on a tray covered in grease proof paper (- stick up, base down)
