Go on make your own, just make sure the batter is sticky enough to hold the onions. Try other bhajis like mushroom, red onion, spring onions or courgette.

Ingredients

2 sliced medium onions
1 teaspoon lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon salt

Batter mix -
175g/ 5 oz chickpea flour or garam flour
1/2 teaspoon each of ground cumin, chilli (op) and tumeric
water to bind
salt and pepper

oil to fry

Method

  • Sprinkle onions with lemon juice, slightly salted and seasoned for a couple of hours
  • Make a thick batter by whisking enough water in to the chickpea flour
  • Add the spices and season
  • Mix in the softened onion slices until well coated
  • Deep fry spoonfuls in hot oil; turning till both sides turn golden
