Lentil Dhal
You could serve this dhal as a main dish with rice or alternatively as a side dish. It is fragrant, rich and delicious and one of the simplest dishes to make.
Preparation time: 5 minutes Quantity: Serves as a side dish for 3-4 or as a main for 1-2 Cooking time: 20-30 minutes
Ingredients
180g /6 oz red lentils
1 teaspoon each of cumin, turmeric and chili powder
seasoning
1-2 teaspoons ghee or butter
1 teaspoon garam masala
Method
- Soak red lentils over night. (optional)
- cover in fresh water and bring to the boil, removing any grayish (scum) matter of the top.
- Simmer till soft, adding more water if they look like there going to dry out
- When just cooked add in 1 teaspoon each of cumin, turmeric and chilli powder
- Season well and Cook for a further 5 minutes add 1 -2 teaspoons of butter or ghee (op)
- Serve sprinkled with Garam Masala and chapattis
