Ingredients

To make this African Mandazi Fried bread recipe you will need the following ingredients:
5 cardamon pods
450g/ 16 oz self raising flour
3 tablespoons caster sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 medium egg
1 tablespoon oil
225 ml water

Methods

  1. To make African Mandazi - Fried Breads:
    • Remove the seeds from the cardamon pods and crush
    • Mix the crushed seeds together with the sieved flour , sugar and baking powder -mix
    • Add the egg and oil - mix
    • Mix in the milk and form a dough
    • Kneed for 5-10 minutes till smooth
    • Roll out on a floured surface, cut in to rounds 3 inch wide, 1/2 inch thick
    • Lay in a warm place to rise slightly - 5-10 minutes
    • Fry, submerged in hot oil - till golden on both sides
Preparation time (duration): 15 minutes plus rest time.
Cooking time (duration): 10 minutes
