Vegetarian Facts

  • The Vegetarian society, the oldest organisation in the world it was founded in 1874
  • Britain in the 19th Century saw an awareness of vegetarianism and the society has become an educational charity reliant on donations and memberships. It offers advice, gives talks and presentations, gets involved with the food industry, education and teaching and has its own Oscars, the vegetarian society awards
  • A vegetarian/Vegan diet is very popular in the Netherlands, where the ratio is very high
  • Vegetarianism is higher in Europe (except countries like Turkey, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia and Greece) than anywhere else due to mainly moral issues; other first world countries are catching on like Australia, Southern America and Canada
  • For religious and cultural reasons vegetarianism is popular in India especially the south, certain parts of China, Malaysia and Thailand
  • Vegetarianism reaches globally for one reason or another
  • A semi or demi vegetarian is a person who does not consume red meat or other animal meats but they do eat fish and poultry (such as chicken and turkey) and animal products like eggs and dairy
  • A true vegetarian would consider being a vegetarian because they eat no living matter except a vegetarian who would eat by -products of animal’s i.e.- honey, eggs and dairy
  • Ovo - Lacto Vegetarians are the most common type; Lacto-ovos are a vegetarian who will eat no living matter. So no meat from animal, insect, fish, seafood, poultry or game, basically anything that walked, flew, swam or made a noise. But do eat food made by animal derivatives i.e.- eggs, honey, butter, yogurt, milk, cheese etc. and of course the abundant supply of food that nature endowed us with. I believe there preference would be for free range products for ethical, taste and quality reasons.
  • A Vegan is a strict vegetarian a person who usually by principle, ethical or religious purposes does not eat living matter at all as for an ovo-Lacto, but will not eat any animal or meat derivatives at all. So no eggs, honey or dairy matter
  • A vegan diet would consist of cereals and grains, pulses, nuts, seeds, vegetables and nuts. Soya products replace the dairy.
  • Vegetable oil the fats and beans, pulses and Soya the meats. Most drinks can be drunk, black of course, chocolate from the pure bean and some commercial drinks and juices
  • If the entire world was vegetarian, the land used for cattle grazing and production would revert to arable land. At the moment 1 acre of land is used for crops and 6 acres is used for animal. So if all the land were arable we would produce enough crops to feed the worlds hungry as well as a perfect supply for our health.
